<![CDATA[Articles]]> Thu, 21 Nov 2024 10:42:23 +0000 hourly 1 <![CDATA[I can't sleep]]> Fri, 07 Oct 2016 06:20:17 +0000 i can't sleep - Tips for better Sleep habits !

Understanding the basics of sleep will help you to optimize your sleep. Making an effort to improve your sleep habits will repair and rejuvenate your body, enabling you to take on each new day with enthusiasm. One way to improve your sleep is with the Better Sleep Pillow. Below are some other ways:

Do not nap during the day. If you are having trouble sleeping at night, try your best not to nap during the day because you will throw off your body clock and make it even more difficult to sleep at night. If you are feeling especially tired, and feel as if you absolutely must nap, be sure to sleep for less than 30 minutes, early in the day.

Limit caffeine and alcohol. Avoid drinking caffeinated or alcoholic beverages for several hours before bedtime. Although alcohol may initially act as a sedative, it can interrupt normal sleep patterns. Stay away from stimulants like caffeine. This will help you get deep sleep which is most refreshing. If you take any caffeine, take it in the morning. Avoid all stimulants in the evening, including chocolate, caffeinated sodas, and caffeinated teas. They will delay sleep and increase arousal's during the night.

Keep to a regular schedule - go to sleep and get up at the same time each day. Take a 20 minute to 1 hour walk every day.

Always make sure that you get outside to soak up some natural light each day (remember the sunscreen!) Watch what you eat and stay away from caffeine after the lunch hour. Don't smoke. Nicotine is a stimulant and can make it difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep. Many over-the-counter and prescription drugs disrupt sleep.

Expose yourself to bright light/sunlight soon after awakening. This will help to regulate your body's natural biological clock. Likewise, try to keep your bedroom dark while you are sleeping so that the light will not interfere with your rest.

Exercise earlier in the day. Exercise is very important for a good sleep, but be sure to exercise in the morning or afternoon. Exercise stimulates the body and aerobic activity before bedtime may make falling asleep more difficult.

Tips for a better sleep environment

Use the bed just for sleeping. Avoid watching TV, using laptop computers, or reading in bed. Bright light from these activities and subject matter may inhibit sleep. If it helps to read before sleep make sure you use a very small wattage bulb to read. A 15 watt bulb should be enough.

Make sure your bed is large enough and comfortable. If you are disturbed by a restless bedmate, switch to a queen- or king-size bed. Test different types of mattresses. Try therapeutic shaped foam pillows that cradle your neck or extra pillows that help you sleep on your side. Get comfortable cotton sheets.

Make your bedroom primarily a place for sleeping. It is not a good idea to use your bed for paying bills, doing work, etc. Let your body recognize that this is a place for rest or intimacy.

Avoid bright light around the house before bed. Using dimmer switches in living rooms and bathrooms before bed can be helpful. (Dimmer switches can be set to maximum brightness for morning routines.) Don't stress if you feel you are not getting enough sleep. It will just make matters worse. Know you will sleep eventually.

Keep your bedroom peaceful and comfortable. Make sure your room is well ventilated and the temperature consistent. And try to keep it quiet. You could use a fan or a "white noise" machine to help block outside noises.
Don't let your clock make you anxious. A big, illuminated digital clock may make you anxious. Place your clock so you can't see the time while you're in bed.

Avoid exercise near bedtime. No exercise at least 3 hours before bed. Don't go to bed hungry. Have a light snack, avoid a heavy meal before bed. Bedtime routines are helpful for good sleep.

A good night's rest has always been called beauty sleep / beauty rest and it is no myth. New research shows that individuals who are not sleep deprived have an increased capacity to lose weight and keep it off. Poor sleeping habits also cause you to age at an accelerated rate, both physically and metabolically. Our Memory foam pillow help with this process. Click Here to find out more: Better Sleep

<![CDATA[Insomnia sleep deprivation]]> Fri, 07 Oct 2016 06:15:37 +0000

Sleep Deprivation

Do you stumble out of bed every morning as tired as you were the night before? Do you have high school-age children who wander around like zombies? Is a general lack of energy keeping you from enjoying life like you used to? These are all symptoms of sleep deprivation. Sleep deprivation is a problem that affects millions of people due to the demands of life in the twenty-first century.

Sleep is like making a deposit to a bank account. The more you sleep, the higher your balance is. Waking activity is like making a withdrawal from that bank account. It is important to have enough money in your bank account so that you don’t overdraw. Sleep is the same way. If you don’t get enough sleep, you overdraw your health. There are many consequences to this overdraft on your “sleep account”:

  • Slight drowsiness during daily activities
  • Work accidents
  • Motor vehicle accidents
  • Heart disease
  • Breathing disorders
  • Depression

So you are deprived of sleep. What do you do now? The demands of work and family cannot be lessened, so you have to change the way you sleep. One method is to tone down before bed time. Take a bath, read, do some muscle relaxing exercises, or watch a little T.V. A glass of warm milk or a cup of chamomile tea are two proven standards. Most importantly, make sure that your sleeping area is conducive to healthy sleep. It should be dark, quiet, and cool. You should have clean sheets and a supportive bed.

An often overlooked but very necessary item is a good pillow. A recent development in the pillow industry is the memory foam pillow. Memory foam pillows, like the Better Sleep Pillow, are made from visco elastic foam that provides optimal spinal support. This spinal support keeps airways open so you can breathe easily. Also, because memory foam pillows promote correct spinal alignment, spinal pain during the day is greatly reduced. So order the Better Sleep Pillow today to start your path to better sleep.

<![CDATA[Insomnia treatment]]> Fri, 07 Oct 2016 06:13:52 +0000 Insomnia treatment ideas on how to fall asleep

Insomnia-Treatment Overview

Insomnia Treatment

Consumer Health Digest

What to Do About Insomnia

Up to about one-third of the population have symptoms of insomnia. Those with insomnia typically experience:

Sleepiness
Fatigue
Poor concentration
Decreased alertness and performance
Muscle aches
Depression during the day and night
An over-emotional state (tense, worried, irritable, and depressed)
While it may be very difficult to get to sleep at bedtime, you find yourself "out like a light" in front of the TV, at a movie, reading, or even driving. And anticipating getting a poor night's sleep as well as developing rituals and behaviors you think will help your sleep (going to bed earlier) may actually have the opposite effect -- and make the problem worse. Such is the plight, misery, and danger of insomnia.

Many of us experience temporary insomnia from a few days to a few weeks. This kind of insomnia usually results from normal events in our lives such as:

A stressful event
Emotional stress
Illness
Temporary pain
Disturbances in sleep hygiene (environmental factors under your control that may contribute to disturbed sleep and insomnia)
Disruptions to circadian rhythm (the 24-hour rhythmic regulation of our body processes)
When stressful situations resolve, when you recover from illness, when the pain goes away, when sleep hygiene improves -- then sleep usually improves.

insomnia is caused by medical or psychological conditions, treatment will focus on those underlying conditions. When poor sleep quality itself is the major problem, for many years the primary treatment has been sleep medications, particularly sedative-hypnotics, to relieve symptoms. More recently, there has been increasing support for therapies that involve modifying behavior and lifestyles. These two approaches—sedative-hypnotic medications and behavior therapies—may be prescribed jointly, with the medications helping to provide a good night's sleep and the therapies encouraging long-lasting changes in approaches to sleep.

Behavior therapy

Being prepared for bed means more than turning down the sheets. Sleep therapists know that there are many factors involved in each person's ability to sleep well. Here are examples of therapies that help you develop habits and beliefs that will promote good sleep quality.

Relaxation therapy. People with poor sleep habits often lie in bed with their minds racing through thoughts and concerns. This therapy teaches and applies methods for tensing and relaxing different muscle groups, as well as attention-focusing techniques, such as meditation, which can help stop sleep-disturbing habits.
Cognitive-behavioral therapy helps you to recognize certain beliefs you hold about yourself and sleep, to change those beliefs that might be locking you into unhealthy patterns, and to introduce positive behaviors that will help you create an inviting environment for sleep. Studies of cognitive-behavioral
therapy's effect on people with insomnia have shown good and lasting results in reducing interrupted sleep.7

1. Play a soothing relaxation tape or CD. Pop in a tape or a CD with soothing nature sounds. Play it at a low volume. Let the sounds of the beach, forest,or a rainstorm lull you to sleep.

2. Get up. If you can't sleep, get out of bed. Grab a book. Read for half an hour to an hour. Now, try again. You may be able to sleep, finally.

3. Take a warm bath. Can't sleep? Relax body and soul in a warm tub full of sea salts or bubble bath. Be careful not to fall asleep in the tub!

4. Practice self-relaxation. Starting with your toes and working your way up to your head, tighten and loosen all of the muscles in your body. Tell yourself over and over, as you are doing this, that you are getting very sleepy.

5. Try deep breathing to relax yourself. Take full, deep breaths. Feel the oxygen fill your lungs. Feel your body as it pulls in and pushes out with each inward and outward breath.

6. No naps! Don't take a noon nap or an afternoon siesta. Get up early and stay up all day. Go to bed at a reasonable hour. This should help you to get a peaceful night's rest.

7. Avoid caffeine after dinner. Don't forget this doesn't mean just coffee...tea, chocolate, and soft drinks all include caffeine.

8. Don't stare at your alarm clock, focusing on how little sleep you are going to get! This will only raise your stress level, making it harder to sleep. If you have to, cover the digital display on your alarm!

9. Use your bedroom as a bedroom should be used, for sex and sleep. Don't watch TV in bed. Don't bring your laptop to bed. Don't use your bedroom as an office/sleep space! Create a soothing, relaxing environment for sleep and intimate encounters with your significant other.

10. Set the thermostat at a temperature that will help you fall asleep. If it's too hot, or too cold, you are bound to toss and turn. Find a comfortable temperature for sleeping and set your thermostat there every night before bedtime.

11. Increase your exercise level. Take a morning or evening walk on a daily basis. Just by slightly increasing your exercise level, you can help yourself get to sleep quicker at night. You'll also sleep more soundly!

12. Mellow out for an hour or so before bedtime. Take an hour of quiet time before you try to sleep. Read. Meditate. Just relax. This helps your body to want to go to sleep!

13. Save your worries for another time. If you lay down and begin to worry about bills, health, loved ones, whatever, then you aren't going to sleep. Focus on soothing scenes and pleasant emotions at bedtime. Save your worries for the next day.

14. Arrange to have sex with your mate before going to sleep. This is a great way to relax. Keeps your spouse happy, too!

15. Try the age old trick of counting backwards from a thousand with your eyes closed. Get under the covers, close your eyes, and start counting. Hopefully, you'll never even reach 900.

<![CDATA[What is Sleep Apnea?]]> Fri, 07 Oct 2016 06:07:43 +0000 What is Sleep Apnea?

by Dr. Joseph J. Berke, M.D., Ph.D.

Snoring can be a real problem. Not only is it embarrassing for the person exhibiting the habit. It can also be frustrating for the spouse or partner who is trying desperately to sleep. Many people reach over and wake their partner up telling them to stop snoring. This advice is naïve at best since snoring is not a voluntary sleep pattern. It can actually be a symptom of sleep apnea, a very serious problem.

Many people are unfamiliar with the term sleep apnea. The more common term for obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, sleep apnea is a sleep disorder that demonstrates itself by several episodes of interrupted breathing during sleep.

If someone does not suffer from sleep apnea, their airway remains open during sleep since the muscles in the upper part of the throat relax during sleep to ensure that air flows through the lungs. However, individuals suffering from sleep apnea may have a more narrow air passage. When they sleep, relaxing the muscles can cause that narrow passage to close rather than open. This means air can't get into the lungs. This equates to loud snoring and breathing. In extreme cases, air is completely blocked from the lungs.

Patients suffering from sleep apnea can stop breathing for a long period of time. This time differs, but it is often greater than ten seconds. A partner may notice them snoring then snorting and gasping for breath. Since sleep apnea causes a pause in breathing, these patients are actually making attempts to breathe. Each time this occurs, they move to a different, lighter, stage of sleep. This is, of course, a less than ideal night's rest, and many sleep apnea patients report daytime drowsiness.

Sleep apnea can affect people of all ages and sizes, but the highest affected percent of the population seems to be elderly, obese men. There are other issues that can contribute to a person's likelihood of having sleep apnea. Some of these factors include nasal obstruction, strange shaped jaws and palates, large tongues, tiny airways, etc. If you take sleeping pills or drink alcoholic beverages before going to bed, you can also be prone to sleep apnea episodes.

How do you know if you have sleep apnea? Talk to your partner. Sleep apnea doesn't just mean snoring. It means snoring at a normal pace then progressively becoming louder. The snoring then stops to be interrupted by silence when no breathing is taking place. Then, the person begins snorting or gasping or wheezing as the snoring returns.

If you think you suffer from sleep apnea, realize this is a very serious problem and talk to your doctor about it. Since extreme cases of sleep apnea can actually lead to pulmonary hypertension or heart failure, it is very important to diagnose sleep apnea.

Is there anything you can do to avoid sleep apnea? No, but there are things you can do to lessen your chances of having sleep apnea episodes. You should refrain from drinking alcoholic beverages or taking sleeping pills near bedtime. You should not eat right before bedtime, and you can purchase a sleep apnea or snore pillow designed to promote proper neck and spine alignment, lessening your chances of snoring.

<![CDATA[Lower Back Pain]]> Fri, 07 Oct 2016 06:01:57 +0000 Lower Back Pain

Do you suffer from frequent or constant pain in your lower back?

If so, then you are not alone. Lower back pain is a very common condition among adults. The severe pain that it can inflict is one of the main reasons for frequent
physician visits. If lower back pain is a cause of constant stress in your life,
then this is the website for you!

There are many causes of lower back pain. Among them are:

  • Untreated injuries
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Scoliosis
  • Muscle spasm
  • Ruptured or Herniated Disk
  • Poor alignment of the vertebrae
  • Spinal Stenosis
  • Improper sleeping

Some people who are at great risk of lower back pain are:

  • Construction or manual labor workers
  • Those with bad posture
  • Pregnant women
  • Smokers
  • Those who don’t exercise
  • Those who are overweight
  • Those with arthritis or osteoporosis

Treatment
Most lower back pain will treat itself. The best plan is to not worry about it. If you suffer from lower back pain you should try to stay active and maintain good posture. If you have to rest, keep it to a minimum. The need to rest is a result of the pain and is not a good treatment. Use regular, over the counter pain killers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen if necessary. If the pain persists more than a few days, contact a doctor.

Memory Foam Pillows
A great, risk free treatment is the use of a memory foam pillow like the Better Sleep Pillow. These pillows promote optimal spinal alignment and will greatly reduce if not completely end lower back pain. By maintaining correct spinal alignment, your spine is able to adjust itself to the healthiest position. This can result in the same pain relief that expensive medical procedures and doctor visits offer. So order the Better Sleep Pillow now and take the first step to getting rid of your lower back pain.

FOR YOUR ARM a center & side recess.

  • Ever feel pain, numbness or tingling after a night of resting your head, or head and pillow on your arm and shoulders? By having a recessed portion for your arm along the entire length of the pillow, your arm is nestled in a way that’s most natural for your body. You’re less likely to change positions all night long which in the end means sleep innovation, no dark circles under your eyes, and the absence of moodiness or lethargy during the day.

Finding the Right Neck Pillow

Front View w/ Terrycloth Cover

Often, a restless night's sleep is the result of an unsupportive pillow. The average sleeper rotates through multiple head and neck positions throughout the night. And because the average pillow was never designed to respond and adapt to change (or different body shapes), your pillow slowly succumbs to your weight, reduced to a smooshy, lumpy sack of feathers or foam.

Only a pillow composed of 100% memory foam can adapt to your precise coordinates with targeted and continuous support. It adapts not once, but multiple times throughout the night as you change your sleeping position!

In fact, the Better Sleep Pillow is the only orthopedic pillow designed to settle your body comfortably, on your back, side or stomach in the correct spinal alignment. Frequently changing your sleeping position demands different support. That is why Dr. Berke designed this distinctive multi-positionable sleeping pillow. It's not just corrective support; it's like having back and neck therapy while you sleep!

Especially for side sleepers, the recessed arm and shoulder support is contoured so that you can rest your head and neck comfortably in a natural position that allows for correct spinal alignment. Your head and neck stay level while the Memory Foam provides flexible cushioning and jaw comfort - essential for TMJ sufferers.
